シベリア、オムスク生まれの作曲家、シェバリーン（1902-1963）の珍しい合唱作品集です。両親ともに音楽教師という環境の元に育った彼は20歳の頃にモスクワへ行き、グリエールとミャスコフスキーに見いだされ、モスクワ音楽院で学びました。ショスタコーヴィチとも親交を結び、1920年代には現代音楽連合（AMM）のメンバーとしても名を連ねています。初期には印象派の影響を受けるも、後には社会主義リアリズム路線に転じ、チャイコフスキーの「1812年」の終結部の改変などを行っています。当局の依頼により作曲家の書いた本来の形を変え、旧ソ連国歌を挿入。今でもその形は耳にすることが可能であり、当時の「国家事情」を慮るには最適な作品と言えましょう。さて、このアルバムですが、ここには彼本来の姿であろう「控え目で楽観的」な作風が横溢する合唱作品集です。民謡風で素朴な味わいです。
