Despite the inclusion of Carl Allen's moody title cut, this tribute to Miles Davis is mostly pretty happy, with four selections taken from Davis' repertoire of the 1950s and early '60s ("All Blues," "My Funny Valentine," "Dear Old Stockholm," and "Just Squeeze Me") plus a few complementary originals by bandmembers. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton (even if he does not sound like Davis) and altoist Vincent Herring make for a potent team, while pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Dwayne Burno join Allen in keeping the music moving. No surprises occur, but there are plenty of fine solos throughout this modern mainstream set. ~ Scott Yanow
