Shortly after disbanding the Pixies in 1993, Frank Black (previously known as Black Francis and born Charles Thompson) unveiled his self-titled solo debut. Fans of his former band could take comfort from the presence of Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and latter-day auxiliary keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman, but FRANK BLACK makes it clear that the singer/guitarist was eager to move beyond his fierce signature sound, as revealed by the chiming melodies of "I Heard Ramona Sing" and a synthesizer-driven, New Wave-inspired take on the Beach Boys' "Hang On to Your Ego." That's not to say that Black had forgotten how to rock out; the surging opening single, "Los Angeles," and the lurching "Ten Percenter" are fast-paced, guitar-heavy tunes that nicely counterbalance the record's lighter moments, such as the dreamy "Places Named After Numbers" and the woozy "Every Time I Go Around Here." While not a radical departure from Pixies territory, FRANK BLACK finds the alt-rock hero venturing beyond familiar territory on this eclectic, assured solo debut.
