When in New York in the '80s, Art Blakey's chief base of operations was the famed Sweet Basil restaurant in Greenwich Village. This live set from that venue features his mid '80s band that introduced the jazz world to the young talents of Terence Blanchard, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Harrison, Lonnie Plaxico, et al. This group was even crisper in their delivery than Blakey's earlier group with Wynton Marsalis and Bobby Watson. Blanchard is extremely agile, though still green, and Harrison is full of life as well. Miller is the most accomplished soloist in the group, aside from Blakey of course. Interestingly, the group favored fewer traditional standards in this edition, instead focusing on original and more obscure material. In this set, the inclusion of Jackie McLean's fiery title track and Ron Carter's "81" is a welcomed treat. Concluding the show, however, is Wayne Shorter's "One By One," a pleasing addition to any Messengers concert.
