This 1988 release sees Chet Baker on stage in Funkhaus Hannover, West Germany. This concert is the last authorized recording by the legendary trumpeter and singer. In fact, Baker was found on the pavement outside an Amsterdam hotel, dead under mysterious circumstances, only two weeks after this concert was recorded. Surprisingly, however, Baker's trumpet playing is full of life and energy on this release. It is said that he was inspired by the setting. Accompanied by a full orchestra, big band, and old friends, Herb Geller (alto sax) and Walter Norris (piano), Baker rises to the occasion, performing with what might be termed, "grace and sophistication" on all seven tracks. Playing some of the most heartfelt solos of his career, Baker seems to hauntingly eulogize his own imminent passing. And his tender vocal musings on "My Funny Valentine" (a lyric which Baker undeniably owns) and "I Fall in Love Too Easily" make THE LAST GREAT CONCERT a respectable, indeed, an endearing farewell to a jazz icon.
