Personnel: Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Steve Coleman (alto saxophone); James Weidman (piano); Mark Johnson (drums); Jerry Gonzalez (percussion); Bemshee Shirer, Naima Williams, Arlene Knox (background vocals). Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff. Recording information: Classic Sound, New York, NY (11/25/1983-11/26/1983). Photographer: Scott Sternbach. For this 1983 set Abbey Lincoln takes full control, choosing the material, the musicians and writing the arrangements. It's both of a piece with her work dating back to the late '50s (such as IT'S MAGIC and THAT'S HIM), and with the stunning releases from the time of her resurgence in the '90s (THE WORLD IS FALLING DOWN and A TURTLE'S DREAM, among others). She also writes half the songs, including the uplifting title track and the propulsive word-jazz of "The River." Her version of Stevie Wonder's "You and I" is one of those remarkable choices that find a song perfectly matched with its singer--the nakedly emotional depth of her performance is riveting. She's backed by many of jazz's then up-and-coming young players--alto saxophonist Steve Coleman in particular is a fine, sympathetic soloist.
