The 34th studio album from country singer Connie Smith, Long Line of Heartaches is her first since 1998 (and only her second album of new solo material since 1978). Produced by Marty Stuart (Smith's husband since 1997), the album makes no attempt to place Smith in line with contemporary country radio, but wisely sticks with Smith's classic traditional country sound, the style that made her one of the finest country singers of the 1960s and 1970s. Five of the songs here were co-written by Smith and Stuart, while the others are from songwriters like Harlan Howard and Johnny Russell. It wouldn't be quite right to call this a throwback album, but it does sound like vintage traditional country given just a bit of a polished edge, and it shows that Smith has no intentions of abandoning the vision, style, and emotional phrasing that marked her earlier work. That's why she's a treasure. ~ Steve Leggett
