On Tassili, Touareg guitar heroes Tinariwen's and their debut for Anti Records, strip their army of hypnotic electric guitars sound back to its barest, and offer a twist. Recorded in a protected region of the Southeastern Algerian desert, this nomadic group recorded Tassili with only acoustic guitars and hand percussion. Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio contributed to the sessions in Africa. The tapes were sent to the States, where Nels Cline added guitar parts, and New Orleans' Dirty Dozen Brass Band's horns were melded into the mix.

ロバート・プラントやトム・ヨーク、ブライアン・イーノといった大物音楽家からも大絶賛され続けている“砂漠のブルースの雄”ティナリウェンが放つ5thアルバム『タッシリ』。今回はアルジェリア南部の砂漠にあるタッシリという街にてレコーディングを敢行。これまで彼らがトレード・マークとしてきたエレキギターという“武器”を置き、彼らの音楽体験の原点であるアクースティック・ギターという相棒を中心に録音に臨みました。これに生パーカッションが加わったアンサンブルは想像以上に刺激的で、これまでのティナリウェンのイメージを遥かに越えるサウンドの幅を生み出し、より生々しく塩辛い砂漠のブルースをここに完成させました。さらにゲストにはインディー系ロックバンド“TV ON THE RADIO”のトゥンデ・アデビンペ（Vo）とキップ・マローン（G&Vo）のほか、ロック・バンド“ウィルコ”のメンバーで前衛系ギタリストのネルス・クライン、さらにはルイジアナ州ニューオーリンズ出身のダーティー・ダズン・ブラス・バンドといった米国の音楽家が多数参加し、斬新で広がりのあるアレンジを導き出してくれました。

2007年作『Aman Iman』がいわゆるワールド・ミュージック・ファンのみならずロック・リスナーの間でも話題になり、今夏も世界中のフェスに引っ張りだこなサハラ砂漠エリア発のバンド、ティナリウェンの5作目。今年の＜フジロック＞で観た方も多いかもしれないが、本作は生ギター音への回帰が特徴的だ。ブルースに影響された部分とアフリカ伝統音楽の混ざり具合が自然で、独特の乾いたグルーヴを生んでいる。

バック・トゥ・ルーツがテーマだった『イミディワン～アフリカの仲間たち』以来となる5作目の注目点は、サウンドの要だったエレキ・ギターが封印されていること。アコースティック・ギターをフィーチャーし、よりじっくりと原点を見つめ直すような音作りを実践している。ひょっとしたら、あの独特のエグみが薄れてしまっているのではないか? そんな不安もよぎったが、カラカラに渇いたギターの音色と手拍子、生パーカッションによるアンサンブルがめっぽう強力なグルーヴを生み出していて仰天。ざわつき感に満ちたディープなアコースティック・ブルースがひしめき合っていた。T V・オン・ザ・レイディオのトゥンデ・アデビンペ&キップ・マローンが参加した《Tenere Taquim Tossam》などプリミティヴなビートの向こうに深遠なるサウンドスケープが広がる超刺激的な仕上がりだ。ウィルコのニルス・クライン、ダーティー・ダズン・ブラス・バンドのホーン隊も参加したかなりの意欲作である。
