Long before "roots-rock" became a genre, the Long Ryders perfected the definitive roots-rock blueprint: a down-to-earth, high-spirited blend of '60s rock & roll and vintage country. Sure, singer Sid Griffin's granny glasses and Victorian-era sideburns were subject to a good deal of derision at the time, but the Long Ryders were arguably one of the best American rock bands to take the field in the mid-'80s.
This two-CD set is a superb career-spanning anthology and a fitting tribute to a band that gave so much but was rewarded with so little. ANTHOLOGY collects most of the band's obscure 10-5-60 EP before moving on to highlights from the debut album, NATIVE SONS, a paisley underground classic that features the rocking college radio hit "Still Get By" and even a guest spot from original Byrd Gene Clark. Though many of the band's fans felt that the group lost a bit of its edge after it signed to Island Records, Island-era songs like the pounding, garage-rocking "Looking for Lewis and Clark" have more than stood the test of time. Packed with all of the band's best tracks, rare demos, live cuts, and decent liner notes, the Long Ryders ANTHOLOGY tells the two-fisted tale of one of the most underrated bands of the '80s.
