1943年に創設されたピューリツァー賞音楽部門は、恐らくアメリカの音楽家ならば誰もが熱望する賞でしょう。このアルバムには、そんな「選ばれた」3つの作品が収録されています（W.シューマンとサワビーの作品は世界初録音となります）。W.シューマンの「自由の歌」は1943年、創設の年の受賞作。ホイットマンの「Drum Taps」をテキストに用いた感動的な作品です。コープランドの「アパラチアの春」は1945年の受賞作。誰もが知ってる名曲であり、ここでの説明は不要でしょう。そしてもう1曲、サワビーの「太陽の讃歌」は、アッシジの聖フランチェスコの讃美歌を基にした作品で、こちらは1946年の受賞作です。天国と地上世界、これらをまるでパノラマで見るように、声と管弦楽で一連の音の絵を描いていくというもの。その迫力に圧倒されずにはおれません。
