La Nouvelle Vague : The Films Of The French New Wave

While this might not have every soundtrack bit worth anthologizing from early French new wave films, it's doubtful a greater or lengthier variety could be assembled on one CD. The 32 tracks on this 79-minute disc include excerpts from some of the most groundbreaking new wave classics (including Breathless, The 400 Blows, Shoot the Piano Player, Lola, and Hiroshima Mon Amour) by Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, Jacques Demy, Claude Chabrol, Louis Malle, and Agnes Varda, as well as a smattering of lesser-known movies. While the music may have worked well onscreen, however, the pieces don't always stand up as well to isolated listening as the accompaniment to some other soundtrack classics does. The approaches used are so different in the scores (and sometimes within the scores themselves), too, that it's pretty unlikely many if any listeners will be engaged in this particular compilation the whole way through. There's American-style cool jazz, sentimental sweeping orchestration, film noir washes, saloon honky tonk, and frivolous cabaret. But if you're a French new wave specialist or soundtrack collector, you'll appreciate having all this in one place, though there's not a consistent mood or style. For the more general listener, highlights will probably include "Chanson de Lola" (sung by Jacqueline Danno and co-written by Michel Legrand and Agnes Varda), easily the most fetching sexy French pop here; the fine bop of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers' "No Problem," as heard in Roger Vadim's 1960 film Dangerous Liaisons; and the very early, almost teen idolish Serge Gainsbourg track "Judith" (from the 1960 film A Game for Six Lovers). It's a little odd that the liner notes have some information about the films and the directors, but virtually no commentary on the music, though the sources of the excerpts and their composers/performers are detailed in the track annotation. ~ Richie Unterberger|
