50sロックンロール・オリジネイターたちのなかでも、後世への影響力ではバディ・ホリーが図抜けているだろう。本人が作曲して歌うというシンガー・ソングライター作法と、ミニマムな編成でみずからが演奏するバンド・サウンド。え、そんなのビートルズ以降ではあたりまえだって? そりゃそうさ、なにせビートルズはホリーのスタイルを見習って結成したんだから。飛行機事故によって22歳の若さで夭折したホリーだが、わずか3年も満たない活動期間に多くの名曲を残している。この『Rave On Buddy Holly』は新旧の豪華なアーティストが参加した、彼の生誕75年を記念してのトリビュート・アルバムだ。ホリーの版権をすべて買収したほどの熱狂的な信者であるポール・マッカートニーは、"It's So Easy"を超へヴィー・ロッキンに披露。ルー・リードによる"Peggy Sue"は、ルー節全開のノイジー&ルーズなサウンドで面目躍如。パティ・スミスの"Words Of Love"は、ペースをグッとスロウにして独特の浮遊感を出している。若手勢では、原曲の哀切さを見事に再現したマイ・モーニング・ジャケットの"True Love Ways"や、猥雑な仕上がりが魅力のジュリアン・カサブランカス（ストロークス）による"Rave On"が出色。また、シー&ヒム、ジェニーＯ、カレン・エルソンなどのポップな解釈を聴くと、常にジェントリーな趣のあるホリーの楽曲は、意外なほど女性ヴォーカルとの相性が良いことにも気付かされる。参加者の誰もが心底楽しんで歌い、演奏していることが伝わってくる、胸躍るような好企画盤だ。
