Johnny Thunders was always sloppy and uneven, but this concert film shows that before drug addiction became his full-time occupation, he burned with rock & roll fire. Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers: Dead or Alive combines snippets of the ex- New York Doll's 1977 punk tour with the Sex Pistols, some footage from the aborted "Stations of the Cross" project, some interview footage, and a 1984 London concert. Thunders was still considered a relatively hot property at this time and the concert hall is packed. Though Thunders' songwriting abilities were always pretty weak, it's easy to see how much his proto punk-pop sound influenced such bands as the Sex Pistols, Generation X, and Green Day. The DVD has been remastered well and the audio track sounds great fed through a stereo system. ~ Nick Dedina
