19世紀の中国を舞台に、生涯の友を誓い合った女性2人と、彼女たちの子孫にあたる2人の現代の上海のドラマ(ともに2役)が交錯する。監督のウェイン・ワンは、中国を舞台にした中国人たちのドラマながら、音楽を盟友の名匠レイチェル・ポートマンに依頼。女性同士の友情のドラマを、女性作曲家らしい柔らかな優しさに富んだメロディアスなストリングスとピアノ、そして中国古来の楽器のエッセンスも取り入れたタッチで、心地よい幸福感に浸ることができるサウンドに仕上げている。ほんのり東洋テイストは入るが、それよりも、ポートマンの名作『サイダーハウス・ルール』の肯定的な美しさを思い出せて感動。 (C)馬場敏裕
