Standing on the Rooftop is Madeleine Peyroux's debut recording for Decca with producer Craig Street. With a diverse group of players (including guitarist Marc Ribot and bassist Me'Shell Ndegeocello, among many others), the program is richly and elegantly painted with modern production touches even as its songs are rooted in the historical past of classic Americana: pop songs, blues, jazz, and sitting room tunes. The music is summery and laid-back. The languid parlor-room reading of "Martha My Dear" by Lennon & McCartney has a deliberate old-timey feel, while Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain," with its strange pump organ backdrop and studio echo, indulges the kinds of production tricks Tom Waits might employ in disguising a blues. ~ Thom Jurek|

プロデューサーがラリー・クラインからクレイグ・ストリートに変わり、さらにマーク・リーボーとミシェル・ンデゲオチェロも演奏で参加。前作でもジョー・ヘンリーの曲を取り上げるなど、ジャズの範疇に収まらないクロスオーヴァー感覚やオルタナ感覚をそこはかとなく打ち出していた彼女だが、本作ではそれがますます顕著に(個人的には大歓迎!)。いよいよロック・ファンも無視できなくなってきた、そんな力作だ。

早いもので、これで5枚目だそうだ。そうか、もうそんなになるか。とはいえ96年のデビュー以来、マデリン・ペルーの印象は変わらない。驚くべきほどに。ビリー・ホリデイ似の歌声、絶妙な選曲、簡素で洒脱なアレンジ。前作で自作曲を歌い新生面を見せたとはいえ、その〈変わらなさ〉は変わらない。それは確固たる個性の証左でもあるが、一方で、驚きが減ってしまった感も否めない。悪く言って読めてしまう。どうする、マデリン。呼ばれたのは、カサンドラ・ウィルソンやジョン・レジェンドなどとの仕事で知られるプロデューサー、クレイグ・ストリートだ。マデリンの個性を否定することなく、その「可動域を広げる」というのが課せられた任務ということになる。ギターにマーク・リーボウ、ベースにミシェル・ンデゲオチェロ、キーボードにジョン・カービーなどが召集され、新しいチャレンジがはじまる。1曲目はビートルズの《マーサ・マイ・ディア》。バンジョーの音色に乗って歌いだすマデリンは、ぼくらがよく知ってるマデリンだ。だが、ハイトーンを絞りだす感じはかつての彼女にはなかったかもしれない。お。可動域、広がってるかも。2曲目にいたれば〈変化〉はもはや明らかだ。エレキベースが「ぶん」とうなり、そこにワウギターが絡んで展開されるはトニー・ジョー・ホワイトばりのスワンプ・チューンだ。聴き進めるほどにジャジーな要素は省かれルーツロック色が前面に打ち出されるていることがわかる。音は簡素だがバンドは多彩なアイディアでマデリンの声に次々と新しいテキスチャーをまとわせる。その手際のよさ、的確さ。深いリバーブやさりげない電子処理なども施しつつ、ときにファンキー、ときにスペーシー。アルバムは良質なポップロックの味わいが濃厚だ。「フォーキーで洒脱なジャズシンガー」は本作で、野心的なSSWにも似た相を帯びる。言われなきゃマデリンだって気づかないような瞬間がいくらでもある。これは読めなかったな。驚いた。
