The Penguin Cafe Orchestra was a truly unique group. Not quite jazz and not quite chamber music, they can usually be found shoehorned into the new age section -- a poor fit at best. History gives a career-spanning overview of this wonderful group, sporting live and unreleased material as well as album highlights in fantastic remastered sound, from the original tapes. If you haven't heard the band before, a four-CD set might be a bit much to start with (try Preludes, Airs & Yodels), but anyone who has heard the Penguin Cafe Orchestra will be quite pleased not only with the sound, but with the lovingly assembled package and previously unreleased material. This is beautiful music from an unheralded band. Recommended. ~ Sean Westergaard
