Whereas bands like Los Palominos tend to stick to the traditional nitty-gritty of snare and accordion, La Mafia puts a contemporary twist on everything it does. On MOMENTOS, La Mafia is able to experiment without loosing sight of the Tejano heart at the core of the music. La Mafia draws from such diverse influences as reggae, folk, and rock. Feet and fingers will take cue from upbeat accordion beats on "Loco De Gusto" and "Quisiera Ser Yo," backed by the pleasant chords of guitarist Randy Miller. But the mood of this album is predominantly romantic, one set by the earnest and yearning opening statement of the ballad "Los Momentos." Beautiful harmony combines on the country-flavored "Dicen," where the dreamy voice of Oscar De La Rosa receives dark and brooding support from orchestra strings and a low, rambling bass. However, the life of La Mafia is not all about plucking the heartstrings; reggae fans will dig the funky steel drums on the dance track "Soy Tan Feliz." LOS MOMENTOS shows that La Mafia's penchant for variety and experimentation makes the group perfect for a Saturday night out on the town.
