By the time Jerry Knight recorded the Love's on Our Side LP, he'd abandoned the intriguing R&B/acid rock/pop hybrid he'd shaped with producer David Kershenbaum on his debut LP, Jerry Knight (and the 20-R&B hit Overnight Sensation). The singer/songwriter/bassist was teamed with artist/producer Leon Haywood, who'd produced Carl Carlton's gold single "She's a Bad Mama Jama." The album's aim seems to have been to make Knight more radio-friendly. The pumpin', brassy lead single "She's Got to Be (A Dancer)" recalls both Rick James and Cameo's "Freaky Dancin'' and peaked at number 71 R&B in early 1983. The album's cornerstones are the ballads "Brand New Fool"; "She's So Beautiful," co-produced by Byron Clark; and the sweet old-school jam "Do You Really Mean It." ~ Ed Hogan
