Personnel: Amy Helm, Marie Spinosa (vocals, whistle); Garrett James Uhlenbrock (slide guitar); Rachel Handman (violin); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Matt Jordan (flugelhorn); Jim Burgess (trombone); Dave Fridmann (piano, Mellotron); Aaron Hurwitz (piano); Jimy Chambers (harpsichord, Clavinet, drums); Adam Snyder (Hammond b-3 organ, Wurlitzer organ, Mellotron); Scott Petito (upright bass, electric bass); Jeff Mercel (drums). Audio Mixer: Dave Fridmann. Recording information: NRS Studio; Six Hours Studio; Tarbox Road Studios. Photographers: Jim De Barros; Kate Hyman; Kevin Salem. Deserter's Songs: Instrumental is basically for anyone who felt like they couldn't get enough of a good thing. While the original album was remixed, remastered, and otherwise fooled with to fine effect, it appears that this this set -- which mirrors the original song for song -- is literally the same recording sans the voices. Deserter's Songs was the album on which Mercury Rev lost its trademark, mischievous, and occasionally anarchic sense of humor, and became more ambitious musically. They focused less on adventurous -- if sometimes unprofessionally performed -- music and more on a traditional symphonic pop framework and Dave Fridmann's growing studio prowess, which one can hear without the interruption of the human voice, his Theremin and Mellotron, Suzanne Thorpe's flute, Jonathan Donahue's chamberlain strings, guest Rachel Handman's violins, as well as brass, vibraphones, and Grasshopper's woodwinds. ~ THom Jurek

商品の紹介

Record Collector (magazine) (p.90) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "'Opus 40,' 'Holes' and 'Goddess On A Highway' sound as weird and wonderful as ever, and the album's juxtaposing of playfulness and melancholy is as odd and potent as before." Clash (Magazine) - "From the opening six-minute 'Holes,' we are flung into Mercury Rev's expansive vision -- panoramic soundscapes with sweet orchestral waves of joy..."
