アイスランド出身で現代クラシック/ポスト・クラシカルの旗手として注目を集めるJóhann Jóhannsson。シカゴ出身の映像作家Bill Morrisonのドキュメンタリー作品『The Miners'Hymns』のスコアとなります。FatCat内の弦楽/ピアノ曲をメインとしたクラシック部門130701からの初のリリースとなることからもわかるとおり、ただの映画スコアではなく、16管のブラス・アンサンブルを世界遺産としても有名なイギリスのダラム大聖堂で録音する、本格的なクラシカル作品としても聴くことができます。炭鉱夫による息抜きや安らぎのために始められたという英国式のブラス・バンドは19世紀後半に確立。本作に参加しているブラス奏者も、1877年に結成された"The Pelton Fell Colliery Band"を母体とする歴史ある"NASUWT Riverside Band"のメンバーら。つまり映像内容と演奏者には古い繋がりがあり、Johann Johannssonが見事な作曲でそれらを強固なものにし説得力を持たせています。訳せば"炭鉱夫の賛美歌"というタイトルに相応しい作品となっており、英国式ブラス・バンドの特徴を捉えた、荘厳でやわらかな楽曲に深く吸い込まれていきます。
