Arranger: Pablo Castro. While some artists use the MTV Unplugged series to explore their repertoire further, others see it as a way to celebrate their discography in a more intimate setting. The legendary norteno group Los Tigres del Norte certainly fall into the latter category on this 2011 release, bringing in some high-caliber friends to help liven up the party by offering a career-spanning whirlwind of greatest hits. Obvious highlights include a spirited take of "Mi Buena Suerte" with Diego Torres, a triumphant version of "Somos Mas Americanos" with Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la Rocha, and an elegant, tango-influenced performance of "La Mesa del Rincon" with Andres Calamaro. The 2010 immigration debate and the Mexican drug wars are addressed head on, so don't think this celebration is without a message, but if you're looking for a spirited introduction to the group, MTV Unplugged is an arguably better choice than any of their standard best-ofs. ~ David Jeffries
