Personnel: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Jorge Dalto (piano, Clavinet); Ronnie Foster (electric piano, mini-moog); Phil Upchurch (guitar, bass); Stanley Banks (bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion). Recorded at Capitol Records, Hollywood, California from August-November, 1976. Personnel: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Jorge Dalto (piano, Clavinet); Ronnie Foster (electric piano, mini-Moog synthesizer); Harvey Mason, Sr. (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion). Audio Mixer: Al Schmitt. Audio Remasterer: Joe Reagoso. Recording information: Capitol Records, Hollywood (08/1976-11/1976). Photographers: Antonin Kratochvil; Ken Veeder. This follow up to Benson's first cross-over success, BREEZIN', is Benson and producer Tommy LiPuma's effort to cement the guitarist/vocalist firmly in the public's mind as a pop artist. The disco-flavored music on this 1977 recording appropriately reflects the year in which was recorded, and while it may bring back memories for some listeners, it will sound out of date to others. Benson gives the world his take on several pop hits, including Stevie Wonder's "Nature Boy" and Donny Hathaways's "Valdez in the Country," as well as the album's highlight, "The World is a Ghetto." The instrumental tracks are marked with Benson's famous scatting. Phil Upchurch and Harvey Mason contribute to Benson's quality back-up band.

商品の紹介

In the wake of "This Masquerade," the balance of power shifted for the first time toward George Benson's suddenly marketable voice; four of the six tracks on In Flight are vocals. By this time, Benson was tailoring his tenor toward soulful pitch-bending a la Stevie Wonder on tunes as diverse as "Nature Boy" and "The World Is a Ghetto," and the unison scatting with the guitar that caught fire with the public on Masquerade is now pulled out whenever possible. Benson's backing band from Breezin', still set in its funk mode, is intact, and Claus Ogerman again contributes gentle orchestral cushions. The two instrumentals, particularly Donny Hathaway's "Valdez in the Country," prove that Benson remained a brilliantly inventive melodist on guitar, in full possession of his powers. Yet there is every indication here that Benson was set upon becoming primarily a pop star. ~ Richard S. Ginell
