The Universal compilation series which started back in 2005 returns for its annual seasonal installment of the best R&B tunes from spring 2011. The two-CD, 40-track collection may contain number ones from Black Eyed Peas ("The Time") and Bruno Mars ("Grenade"), and Top Five singles from Jessie J ("Do It Like a Dude"), Rihanna ("S&M"), and Far East Movement ("Like a G6"), but Massive R&B: Spring 2011 is less hit-focused than its predecessor. Superstars like Kanye West ("Runaway"), Usher ("Spotlight"), and Mariah Carey ("Up Out My Face") appear, but it's their lesser-known album tracks which make the cut rather than their more familiar chart successes, providing a more unique and less predictable offering than similarly themed releases. Wisely representing British R&B artists alongside their more celebrated American counterparts, there is retro-soul from Plan B ("Prayin'"), grime from Skepta ("Amnesia"), dubstep from Devlin ("Let It Go"), pop-rap from N-Dubz ("Morning Star"), and urban electro from Taio Cruz ("Higher"), in addition to tracks from Jodie Connor, Donae'o, and Tinchy Stryder. Highlights from the first disc include the Lonely Island ft. Akon's parody "I Just Had Sex," Lupe Fiasco's hip-hop anthem "The Show Must Go On," and Trey Songz's seductive ballad "Can't Be Friends," while Chase & Status' old-school, Loleatta Holloway-sampling "Blind Faith," Cee-Lo Green's Motown pastiche "It's OK," and Nicole Scherzinger's energetic, Lady Gaga-esque stomper "Poison" are the standouts from Disc Two. If you're looking for the biggest and most commercial hits from the contemporary urban scene, you'd be better off with the Essential R&B and R&B Collection series, but if you fancy discovering some new material, Massive R&B: Spring 2011 could provide you with a wealth of potential future favorites. ~ Jon O'Brien
