Jane Eyre (2011)

Oscar-winning composer Dario Marianelli is no stranger to English drama, as evidenced by his work on such anglophile fare as Atonement (2007) and Pride and Prejudice (2005). His rich, classically structured, emotive style lends itself completely to the genre, which makes his involvement with director Cary Fukunaga's 2011 take on Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre a real no-brainer. Marianelli teamed up with French classical pianist Jean Yves-Thibaudet for Atonement, a move mirrored this time around with his pairing with gifted British violinist Jack Liebeck. The music is appropriately dark and stormy, with long, drawn-out melodies that echo the foggy moors and wet dirt roads of the English countryside. Marianelli and Liebeck dutifully capture the Gothic undertones of Bronte’s influential novel while maintaining a sense of the bittersweet sentimentality that drives the mismatched lovers to such lengths, resulting in the perfect soundtrack for the cold, gray rains of March. ~ James Christopher Monger

シャーロット・ブロンテの名作を『闇の列車、光の旅』で一躍注目されたキャリー・フクナガ監督で映画化。脚色は『TAMARA DREWE』で注目されたモイラ・ブッフィーニ。孤児ジェーン・エアが波瀾の生涯の後、愛する人と結婚するまでを描く。映画化は96年にシャルロット・ゲンズブール主演でフランコ・ゼフィレッリが撮って以来。音楽は、新・正統派ともいうべき流れの中心的存在のダリオ・マリアネッリ。『プライドと偏見』以降、最もこの才能の味を楽しめるクラシカルな素材の、現代での再生。バイオリンにジャック・リーベック、ピアノにジョン・アレイ、ソプラノのメラニー・パッペンハイムのヴォイスをゲスト・ソロに、ひそやかに美しいメロディを奏でていく。悲しくも希望的エンディングに向かって、決して感動をあおらない、抑制した美しさのサウンドが流れる。バイオリンが美しいサントラを、という方に特にお薦め。 (C)馬場敏裕
