After coming out of a period of semi-retirement to tour with the Ray Brown Trio, pianist Gene Harris became a fixture on the Concord label. Concord Jazz Heritage Series is 1998 sampler CD with 11 selections taken from 11 of Harris' Concord dates, featuring the soulful and very accessible pianist in a variety of settings. In addition to grooving with a few quartets, he is heard on two numbers leading the Phillip Morris Superband, interacting with tenorman Scott Hamilton on "You Are My Sunshine," meeting up with organist Jack McDuff on two occasions (including a feature for vocalist Curtis Stigers on "Lean on Me"), and playing a blues-drenched "Battle Hymn of the Republic" with the tough tenor of Stanley Turrentine. A good overview, although not as preferable as getting the many complete Gene Harris Concord sessions. ~ Scott Yanow
