Personnel: Dr. John (guitar, piano). Liner Note Author: Alfie Falckenbach. For all his voodoo posturing, Dr. John's mix of Creole, zydeco, blues, jazz, and R&B is straight New Orleans roots music, held together by his fine stride piano playing, gruff vocals, and a whole lot of glitter and dust, and Dr. John knew what he was doing was far from new. He just gave it a playful, maybe even dangerous sheen. This two-disc set of Dr. John's 1960s recordings shows him with everything in place and just beginning to develop the gris gris persona that help gather him a huge and devoted audience a decade later. The key elements of his New Orleans sound, minus a lot of the marketing smoke and mirrors, is on full display here. ~ Steve Leggett
