In 1990, a few months prior to this CD, Mel Torme recorded a set with his trio at the Concord Jazz Festival, which climaxed with three songs with the Frank Wess-Harry Edison Orchestra. This particular CD is similar and just as enjoyable. With the assistance of pianist John Campbell, bassist Bob Maize, and drummer Donny Osborne, Torme is swinging on "Shine on Your Shoes" and a medley of "Don't 'Cha Go 'Way Mad" and "Come to Baby Do." But it is his remarkable ballad renditions of "Star Dust" (during which Frank Wess sits in on tenor) and a definitive "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" that are most memorable; no other vocalist can hold notes so long. This time, the big band is led only by Wess, and in addition to vocal versions of "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "Sent for You Yesterday," Torme happily sits in on drums for "Swingin' the Blues," which has a trumpet solo by Joe Newman. Virtually everything Mel Torme has recorded for Concord is quite rewarding; this is one of his best all-around sets. ~ Scott Yanow
