The instrument which Klucevsek plays is a free bass accordion with a 6 1/2 octave range. The term "free bass" refers to the left hand manual which consists of five rows of buttons arranged chromatically, each button containing a single pitch. The instrument is "free" of the pre-set chords associated with the traditional (stradella bass) accordion. This recording was made from January to April, 1991, except for "Road Runner" (January 1986) and "Manhattan Cascade" (February 1986). The last four works on this disc were written as part of "Polka From the Fringe", a collection of over 30 polkas commissioned by Klucevsek. Personnel: Guy Klucevsek (accordion). Liner Note Author: Iris Brooks. Recording information: Baby Monster Studios, Manhattan, NY (01/1986-04/1991); Foothill Mastering Productions, New York, NY (01/1986-04/1991); Full House Productions, New York, NY (01/1986-04/1991); India Navigation, New York, NY (01/1986-04/1991). Unknown Contributor Roles: Christian Marclay; John King ; Aaron Jay Kernis ; Mary Ellen Childs; Rolf Groesbeck; John Zorn; Lois V. Vierk; Anthony Coleman . A marvellous, uplifting concert of twisted tunes and new uses for the "free bass accordion" containing Mary Ellen Childs' charming Pygmymusic-like "Oa Poa Polka", Anthony Coleman's plaintive "Below 14th Street, Above 125th Street", Rolf Groesbeck's tone cluster and conjuring "Polka 1", Aaron Kernis's cinematic joke "Phantom Polka" (Kernis is also a composer of some brilliant orchestral music, watch for future recordings), John King's hymn-based "All Together Now", Guy Klucevsek's "Samba D Hiccup" and the lovely "An Air of Gathering Pipers", Christian Marclay's "Ping Pong Polka" with wildly modulated record collage, Lois Vierk's "Manhattan Cascade" (see review under composers), and John Zorn's humorous "Road Runner". ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
