Photographer: William Howard, Jr. The follow-up to Ladytron's well-received debut, 604, LIGHT & MAGIC finds the contemporary synth-pop outfit adding new colors to their darkly alluring sonic vocabulary. Like its predecessor, LIGHT & MAGIC draws on post-punk, new wave, and indie electronic elements (the band is also often associated with the short-lived 'electroclash' label). Opener "True Mathematics" and cuts like "Flicking Your Switch" and "Turn It On" are only a few fine examples of Ladytron's moody pop confections, which manage to be eerie and breezy at the same time. In fact, it's the balance between melancholy, robotic detachment, and hook-heavy accessibility that makes LIGHT & MAGIC one of the better albums of the modern synth-pop genre.
