The top cut on the tenth volume of Masterpiece: The Ultimate Disco Funk Collection is easily Leroy Burgess' "Heartbreaker," released by the Black Ivory boogie king on Salsoul in 1983. Beneath that, there's Sandy Kerr's "Thug Rock" (Catawba, 1982), featuring backing identical to that of I-Level's "Give Me" (released the same year on Virgin) and the Deele's "Working (9 to 5)," an album cut from that group's 1983 Solar debut Street Beat. As usual, sound quality varies from track to track. The PTG label celebrates the series' milestone with a bonus disc that consists of DJ mixes from Gertjan Kuipers and Kees Franken, more an advertisement for the rest of the volumes than anything else. ~ Andy Kellman
