Personnel: Oscar Moore (guitar).
Recording information: 12/06/1940-12/04/1945.
Nat King Cole is chiefly remembered as a superb pop singer with over 100 charting hits to his name, but he began his career as a jazz pianist in the waning of the swing era, and his trio dates for Decca, Excelsior, and Capitol Records in the 1940s are small-combo delights. This two-disc, 50-track set, drawn mostly from Capitol, is remarkably consistent, featuring Cole's vibrant and bright piano runs, Oscar Moore's sympathetic guitar work, and Johnny Miller's bass playing (Wesley Prince handles bass on the Decca and Excelsior sides presented here), along with the first of Cole's distinctive, warm-hearted vocals. The result is both pleasant and revelatory for those unfamiliar with Cole's jazzier roots. ~ Steve Leggett
