Recorded in New York, New York in October 1956.
After a prolonged apprencticeship in Paris in the company of cohorts Blossom Dearie and Annie Ross, Bob Dorough returned to the States and recorded this long-overdue 1956 debut for the short-lived Bethlehem label. Though he hasn't entirely smoothed out all the kinks just yet, Dorough's bop-derived, hipster Hoagy Carmichael vocal-piano style is pretty much fully formed by this point. Highlights include a vocalese adaption of idol Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite," Duke Ellington's insouciant "I Don't Mind," and an atmospheric "Midnight Sun," complete with cocktail-tinkling vibes courtesy of Jack Hitchcock. And speaking of inscouciant, Dorough's original, "Devil May Care," expresses his '50s "Birds Lives" ethos perfectly in bohemian, ramshackle fashion.
