The Brazilian psychedelic group Os Mutantes were one of the most important bands to come out of South America in the 1960s and early '70s; their blend of Beatlesque songwriting and studio trickery with the rhythms and melodies of their home country, not to mention the harmonies of female vocalist Rita Lee and the Baptista brothers, was utterly unique and even occasionally baffling. This tribute album, which features contributions from a few well-known artists (most notably Cafe Tacuba, Fernando Cabrera, and Fito Paez) as well as a track by Mutantes co-founder (and current last original member standing) Sergio Dias in collaboration with Colombian group Aterciopelados, doesn't soften all of Os Mutantes' spiky edges, but it does bring out the beauty of their songwriting without slathering it under field recordings and studio trickery, as their own studio albums sometimes did. Overall, like most tribute albums, it's likely to serve as a treat for the group's existing fan base, but whether it'll inspire listeners who've never heard the originals to seek out the Mutantes back catalog (something more people should definitely do) remains an open question. ~ Phil Freeman
