So you say that you want a radio-friendly power pop revolution--with Fountains of Wayne on sabbatical, who you gonna call? You can definitely do worse than Oxford, England's Candyskins, whose melding of proto-new-wave rockers, trusty Brit-pop and power-chord cheap tricks is continuously amusing. Like all the finest UK power pop, the band's American debut delivers equal portions of hooks and snotty sentiments, less concerned with pomo irony than relaying a sense of twenty-something uselessness with major chords and '60s Cali harmonies.
As comfortable kicking out double-time jams ("It's a Sign") as beach-blanket acoustic storytelling ("Swimming Pool," "Songbird") and grandiose Oasis-meets-Elton pop ("A Song"), the Candyskins gladly evoke the long storied history of guitar-driven pop. But they never resort to direct quotes and familiar cliches, which is clearly an achievement in itself.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
