Burton Greene was a key figure in the New York City avant-garde jazz scene in the '60s. He played and recorded with Pharaoh Sanders, Perry Robinson and Patty Waters, and was recorded by the legendary (yet mysterious) ESP-Disk label. The '70s found him moving to Europe, settling in Amsterdam. Greene has mellowed a bit since the unfettered days of yore. The opener, "Skumpy," is a long (over 10 minutes), playful tune that recalls Vince Guaraldi's music for the "Peanuts" cartoons, before briefly moving into the more key-busting territory of Cecil Taylor, without losing any melodic flow or lyricism. There's a full-bodied version of Thelonious Monk's "Brilliant Corners" that's so genial it sounds as though he's trying to pierce the gloom of a dour friend. "Bubba meisa Drama" reflects a definite Klezmer (Jewish/Yiddish folk with a jazz tinge) influence (Greene also has a Klezmer band, Klezmokum). "Longing" is an aptly-titled, wistful Bill Evans-style ballad. To all lovers of solo jazz piano--or simply, piano--this is a gem.
