Hank Jones is accompanied by Oscar Pettiford and drummer Charlie Smith (who was credited as the leader, though he is nearly forgotten now) in a buoyant "Have You Met Miss Jones?" and lush treatment of "Body and Soul," which is a feature for Pettiford (who died prematurely in his thirties, like Smith). Pettiford is also a part of the rare sessions by Dutch accordion player Mat Mathews (who only made a handful of recordings before returning to commercial work), which feature guitarist Joe Puma and drummer Kenny Clarke along with an alternating cast that includes French horn player Julius Watkins in "As Time Goes By" and an understated "I Only Have Eyes for You," Herbie Mann (on tenor sax) in a crisp "What a Difference a Day Made," and pianist Dick Katz, trumpeter Art Farmer, and alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce in an obscure but tasty original by Katz, "Knights at the Castle." Milt Hinton is the anchor in the final six tracks, including the terrific pairing of Zoot Sims and Bob Brookmeyer in "September in the Rain" and several numbers with Hank Jones and Al Cohn, especially "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," which also has a typically strong Hinton solo. This formerly hard to find music is well worth acquiring. ~ Ken Dryden
