Discerning collectors, take note: though the titles are similar, this compilation is not the same CD as the 18-track 1996 anthology on Ichiban titled It's Gonna Take a Miracle: The MGM Sides. This British 2010 release, on the RPM label, is more comprehensive, its 30 songs including everything from their two MGM albums, as well as three non-LP bonus tracks from 1966 singles. The casual soul fan doesn't miss much by sticking with the shorter 1996 compilation. But for more serious Royalettes fans, this is an admirably complete and well-annotated document of their MGM output, which comprised most of their discography. Though only the title track made much of a commercial impact, their MGM recordings were more consistent than those of many soul artists with higher profiles. It's true that nothing matches "It's Gonna Take a Miracle," and that there's some similarity to much of the material that some fussy specialists might find a little off-putting. But for those who enjoy early soul music with poppier orchestrated production and a greater lingering girl group influence than much of the style boasted, it's a fine listen, with relatively few mediocre tracks and quite a few good ones. Even the LP-only tracks are largely respectable, and though like many soul acts they turned to some pop standards to fill out one of their albums (1966's The Elegant Sounds of the Royalettes), they didn't overdo it. ~ Richie Unterberger
