When Nick Cave put the Bad Seeds on temporary hiatus, he formed Grinderman with Warren Ellis, Jim Sclavunos, and Martyn Casey -- all members of his primary outfit. They were the mirror image of the Bad Seeds: irreverent, hard rocking, and just plain fun. They issued their self-titled debut album, a crunchy, howling slab of grit, grime, sleazy humor, swampy shambolic blues, and high-octane garage band energy. Grinderman 2 is another step in that direction, albeit a bit further afield. Cave's songwriting goes further into the blackly humorous -- note titles such as "Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man" and "Worm Tamer" to name just two -- and the band's sound evolves. All the original trademarks are there: the cacophonous piano, howling guitars and electric mandolins, sawing violins, low-end basslines, and cracking, clamorous beats, rooted in basic roar and roll. That said, these songs travel to the fringes as well; there is more improvisation, more willingness to let a tune come close to falling apart before pasting it back together. This is what some would call a more "experimental" record, though it is no less enjoyable, and far more fierce in the death-rattling whomp that Grinderman's debut merely hinted at.
