The latest installment from the 101 series, this collection of dance anthems is perhaps the most comprehensive and eclectic Ibiza-themed compilation on the market. From Blow Monkeys' 1990 "La Passionara" right up to summer 2010 number ones from Roll Deep and Yolanda Be Cool, the album covers everything from classic rave (Utah Saints, Guru Josh) to trance (Jurgen Vries, Ian Van Dahl), to soulful house (Shapeshifters, the Original). From the more contemporary first disc, Example's piano-led anthemic "Watch the Sun Come Up," David Guetta's Coldplay-inspired floor-filler "When Love Takes Over," and Deadmau5's classy electronica "I Remember" are the highlights. But it's the second disc that makes this a cut above similar retrospectives, with an astonishing continuous run of tracks featuring ten number ones, among them Spiller's Victoria Beckham-beating "Groovejet," the filtered Gallic house of "Modjo's Lady," and Roger Sanchez's atmospheric Toto-sampling "Another Chance." With not a dud among its 23 tracks, there are also iconic tunes from Benny Benassi, Stonebridge, and Mylo, while Kylie's "Can't Get Blue Monday out of My Head," only previously available as a B-side, is a welcome inclusion of perhaps the most convincing mash-up of the last decade. The third disc contains nearly as many classics, with chart-toppers from Olive, Armand Van Helden, and Tori Amos, and massive anthems from Underworld, Alison Limerick, and Moloko, but the slightly repetitive Disc Four, with its focus on commercial trance, sounds a little too much like an album from the Clubland brand. But there are still several gems included, such as Robert Miles' gorgeous instrumental "Children," ATB's twang guitar-led "9pm (Till I Come)," and Brainbug's sinister-sounding "Nightmare." After 84 songs of high-octane, pulsating beats, the final disc slows the tempo right down, showcasing some of the best chillout tracks that found their way to dinner parties as well as Ibiza clubs, with Groove Armada's "At the River," Zero 7's "Destiny," and Air's "All I Need," all still sounding as glorious as when they were released ten years ago. There are a few notable omissions, (Delirium, LMC, Deep Dish) and the lack of hit-makers Basement Jaxx and Freemasons is a surprise. But, with such a varied and hit-laden track list, 101 Ibiza Anthems will appeal to any clubber who has partied at dance music's premier destination. ~ Jon O'Brien
