Jolene employs lots of jangly guitars in service of rootsy, sort-of artsy songs. Think Son Volt, R.E.M., the Continental Drifters (several of whom show up on backing vocals), or a more interesting version of Hootie and the Blowfish. Lead singer John Crooke splits the vocal difference between Michael Stipe and Darius Rucker, favoring the former's lyrical obliqueness. The R.E.M. comparison is actually most apt. Jolene's songs have the same vaguely Southern, sometimes even Appalachian feeling that R.E.M. put across on MURMUR. The sonic approach is similar, too. Conventional instruments are used in unconventional ways, though nothing seems gimmicky. Witness the violin-like sounds coaxed out of guitars and dulcimers on the opening "Calling Madeline." ANTIC OCEAN is a beautiful album, and a terrific cover of Sandy Denny's exquisite "John the Gun" is just the icing on the cake.
