In his introductory notes to Arhoolie Records' THE BEST OF BEAUSOLEIL, band leader Michael Doucet recalls the time when the group had to schedule recording sessions around its members' day jobs. Thankfully, for the band and for lovers of Cajun music leverywhere, those days are long past. Beausoleil is now indisputably the world's most famous Cajun band. For those unfamiliar with the genre, Cajun is a unique blend of Old World French social music and New World traditional country. Think Hank Williams singing "Jambalaya" in a French dialect, accompanied by an accordion, and you'll get the idea. Cajun's joyful sounds are longtime favorites of Louisiana house parties and weddings. More recently, the sound has caught on with fans of world music.
THE BEST OF BEAUSOLEIL recaptures the band's early days-the era during which it clung most tenaciously to the traditional sound and repertoire of such Cajun legends as the Balfa Brothers and the Hackberry Ramblers. Packed with over 72 minutes of music, the disc is a generous sampler of a great band playing its audience's favorites. Guest musicians include guitarist Sonny Landreth and fiddler Candray Fontenot.
