Soft Machine: Karl Jenkins, John Etheridge, Roy Babbington, John Marshall, Carol Barrat. Personnel: John Etheridge (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Karl Jenkins (flute, saxophone, keyboards); Carol Barratt (keyboards); Roy Babbington (bass guitar); John Marshall (drums, percussion). Liner Note Author: John Etheridge . RUBBER RIFF was not originally created for regular commercial release. Soft Machine mainstays Karl Jenkins and John Marshall produced this set as a so-called "needle drop" record, intending the short instrumentals to be used for commercial purposes, such as ads, films, television, etc. They were conceived of as functioning as a bed or background for these various uses. Hence, there's an absence of pronounced foreground melody and movement in most of these pieces. Tellingly, Jenkins later went on into commercial music work not unlike this (a field into which founding member Mike Ratledge also went, meeting with substantial success). While RUBBER RIFF is decidedly not the place to start in exploring this important band, it is, nonetheless, a fascinating document that shows how sometimes art and commerce can intersect.

商品の紹介

The phrase "Soft Machine in name only" is clearly used too often. There are, in fact, plenty of post-1970 recordings that deserve to share that famous prog moniker with the hallowed Third. If the statement ever will apply, however, it must be attached to Rubber Riff, which is essentially a solo effort from composer/sax player/keyboardist Karl Jenkins. If Jenkins (or the musicians performing his music on this 1976 album) had anything more then a casual connection to the original Soft Machine, maybe some could argue the appropriateness of the name. New fans should probably avoid Rubber Riff. That's not to say that the music isn't interesting at times. The Rockford Files redux of "Hi-Power" is a bit of a hoot, and "Paven"'s Blow By Blow-era Jeff Beck tribute is competent enough, but ultimately, this puffy fusion/pop collection has little to offer except for a heap of '70s novelty. ~ Vincent Jeffries
