Long ago, Wayne Hussey went on record describing the Mission's God Is a Bullet album as one of the most productive set of sessions the band ever undertook, and here's the proof -- a 13-song collection of B-sides, outtakes, and just a couple of demos, any and all of which would have dignified the parent album with its presence. Echoing the one-two attack of the Carved in Sand/Grains of Sand sessions at the end of the '80s, God Is a Bullet/Dum-Dum Bullets do indeed stand as a testament to a band that's firing on all cylinders, with "Refugee," "Chelsea Blue," and "The Earth You Walk Upon" all serving up very different, but equally delightful facets of the band, while a pair of stabs at "Blush," acoustic near the start of the album and remodeled at the end, reminds us just what a Mission classic that particular song remains. A terrific album, then, and one whose contents are so far removed from what it says on the tin that, if the Mission hadn't said anything, you'd probably not even know. ~ Dave Thompson
