DJ: Michael Mayer. Recording information: Kompakt Studio 3 (04/2010). The purpose of Immer 3 is the same as that of Immer (2002) and Immer 2 (2006). Michael Mayer diligently selects and sequences tracks dear to him with no concern for reflecting the present or forecasting the future. When it comes to electronic dance music, timelessness as an objective does not tend to work out, but the DJ's record is undeniable; the first Immer, after all, landed on a couple high-profile best-of-decade lists. Don't expect this one to depreciate, either. Excepting a three-track patch of 2010-issued and unreleased tracks, Immer 3 is built of material that spans 2001-2009 and is so low on gimmicks and abrupt transitions that it is virtually inconspicuous, albeit in a way that is lively enough to induce tranquil bliss. It could be the least mixed volume of the series yet; a playlist of the 11 tracks would be only ten minutes (or so) longer than Mayer's program, but again, the hands-off approach is no issue when the sequencing is so skillful and imaginative. Cortney Tidwell, Julia Biel, Hope Sandoval, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Justus Kohncke -- who turns Round Two's bittersweet mid-`90s house classic "New Day" into a gorgeous lullaby -- make it the most vocal-oriented volume. Sounding as if they are in various dream states, they mesh as well as the voices on any This Mortal Coil album. Energy-wise, it's easily the least tense of the Immers, with the Gainsbourg tune (a previously unreleased Superpitcher mix of "The Operation") and Culoe de Song's "The Bright Forest" (tribal melodrama) providing the only certifiably pulse-racing minutes. Smith N Hack's rippling, swarming Italo disco is the most sonically flashy and sleek of the lot, while Closer Musik's "Departures," almost a decade old, is nonetheless the most stunning. Leave it to Mayer to blow the dust off one of his label's earliest classic tracks and place it in a context that makes it sound brand new. ~ Andy Kellman
