18世紀オーケストラでヴィオラ・セクションのリーダーという大役を務める名手エミリオ・モレーノが創設したスペインのピリオド・オーケストラ、エル・コンチェルト・エスパニョール。貴重な記録となった"1800年頃スペインのトナディーリャと大衆音楽劇"(GCD 920309)に続いてエミリオ・モレーノ&エル・コンチェルト・エスパニョールが取り上げるのは、イタリア・バロックの巨匠アントニオ・カルダーラ(1670-1736)の知られざる歌劇「絶大なる名声」。
ヴェネツィアで生を受け、マントヴァ、バルセロナ、ローマ、ウィーンに大きな足跡を残したカルダーラ。スペイン継承戦争真っ最中の1708年、ローマのオットボーニ枢機卿の公邸での歌劇「聖カテリーナの殉教」の上演後にスペインのバルセロナへと向かったカルダーラが、同地で後の神聖ローマ皇帝カール6世の婚礼を祝うために上演した作品がこの歌劇「絶大なる名声」なのである。
エミリオ・モレーノは初めてスペインで演奏されたイタリア・オペラと伝わるカルダーラの「絶大なる名声」を上演するために、カウンタテナーのロビン・ブレイズや、スペインのソプラノ、マリア・エスパダ、ノルウェーのメゾ・ソプラノ、マリアンネ・ベアーテ・キーラントなど欧州各国の名歌手たちをソリストに招くなど陣容もかなり強力。カルダーラのスペイン滞在時代の功績が、モレーノ&エル・コンチェルト・エスパニョールの演奏で明らかになります。
