Following two minor hits, "C30, C60, C90, Go!" and "W.O.R.K.," manager/provocateur Malcolm McLaren released Bow Wow Wow's debut album, SEE JUNGLE! SEE JUNGLE!, in late 1981. Though the album sold poorly upon release, SEE JUNGLE! SEE JUNGLE! is nevertheless a far more interesting set of music than a casual observer might expect. The three musicians, who had been Adam's Ants in the early DIRK WEARS WHITE SOX days, make an engaging faux-African post-punk racket not unlike a poppier version of the Slits, and 13-year-old Burmese singer Annabella Lwin's voice has a certain yelping charm. It's completely contrived, of course, but it's wildly entertaining.
After the surprise US chart success of the group's percussion-heavy cover of the Strangeloves' 1965 hit "I Want Candy," RCA repackaged almost half of this album with the four tracks from the controversially sleeved THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS mini-album to create the LP entitled I WANT CANDY.
