Total Energy combines Critique's three "energy" various-artists compilations -- 100% Energy, 200% Energy, and, finally, 300% Energy -- in one box set. Each disc contains 18 tracks which are segued together to give the album the sound of a dance club. Appropriately, a number of popular American and European dance club artists -- 2 Unlimited, L.A. Style, Urban Cookie Collective, Jakie Graham, Clock, N-Trance, 2 Brothers on the Fourth Floor, Jaki Graham, Newton, Apotheosis, Kym Syms, and Eve Gallagher, among many others -- are featured on these three discs. Many of these names will only be familiar to dedicated clubgoers, which is the way it should be -- this is a set designed for clubs and house parties, not serious at-home listening, and if you have a party to throw, this will be great background music. If you're going to sit and listen to the record -- especially if you're only familiar with dance music by such electronic "intelligent" dance artists as Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Goldie, Tricky, Underworld, or even the Prodigy -- you'll probably find this a little tedious. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
