The Horse Meat Disco crew's second mix for the Strut label is densely packed with supercharged disco and post-disco. Once again, the focus is on the music, not the mixing, which is fluid and discreet, allowing all but one selection to play out for at least five minutes. The first selection is something of a fake-out -- organic, traditionally structured, elaborately arranged disco that features Leonore O'Malley's not-quite-feminist vocal. From there, it gets weird, highlighted by Cyclades' barreling "Fire to Desire" (featuring a delirious, high-pitched female vocal), Scherrie Payne's almost unrecognizable version of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love," and Electra and Tara Butler's pro-fitness "Feels Good (Carrots and Beets)" (which features one of the baddest synthesized basslines). Stephanie Mills' James Mtume/Reggie Lucas-produced "You Can Get Over" isn't particularly bizarre on its own, but something about its context here -- along with slightly adjusted pitch -- makes it seem just a wee bit off-center (in a good way). The most sonically rich of the lot, Lourett Russell Grant's feverish "Hot to Trot," might be the ultimate Horse Meat Disco track -- a horse gallops across it, from channel to channel. Unlike the first volume, there isn't a second disc that contains the tracks in unmixed form. Instead, there's a code that enables the download of 320-kbps MP3s. ~ Andy Kellman
