The second (and sadly the last--"King" Ernest Baker was killed in a car crash just before its release) album by the cult bluesman splits the difference between blues and soul, as the title suggests. Both forms are of the late '60s/early '70s variety.
His back-up band here is pure Memphis minimalist. On Baker originals like "Suffer and Stay," they sound like Booker T. and the MGs, while on "Must Have Lost My Mind," which sounds like the illegitimate offspring of Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone," they do a spookily perfect evocation of the Hi Records house band. Meanwhile, the King himself sings all of this, including a smart cover of Tom Waits' "House Where Nobody Lives," with a mix of slow burning passion and vocal virtuosity that recalls Otis Redding, particularly on the epic "Fallin' Down on My Face With the Blues."
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
