These 19 songs include clips of Bukka White, Sam Chatmon, Big Joe Wiliams, Houston Stackhouse, Son House, Reverend Gary Davis, and Leadbelly, in varying quality, of both the performance and the footage. White, Chatmon, Williams, Stackhouse, and House were all filmed for the BBC in 1972, well after their rediscovery by a new generation of listeners. While the camera work and sound are very professional, some of the performances will mostly hold fascination for blues fanatics; all of them are respectable, but some of the songs go on way too long (particularly House's and Chatmon's), and all of the singers are past their prime (Chatmon's singing certainly is, although his playing remains sharp). White's two songs really shine in this context: his slide-driven style is riveting (on one of the tunes, he plays the guitar on his lap). Often he'll sound like he's playing two guitars at once, such is his proficiency and mastery. The Gary Davis songs come from a 1966 home movie (he hardly takes his cigar out of his mouth the whole time), and is perhaps too unfinished and casual for all but scholars. Leadbelly finishes the program with a brief clip of "Goodnight Irene" (taken from a 1935 film) and a few lip-synched songs from a 1945 screen test (posthumously dubbed by Pete Seeger). ~ Richie Unterberger
